Does Tetley® have gluten in its tea bags / tea mix?
We are aware of the allergies suffered by some from gluten. All of the tea bags packaged for Tetley USA Inc. for retail sale, including our decaffeinated, flavored and green blend tea bag products do not contain any gluten. The iced tea mix sold under the Tetley® Brand name does not contain gluten either. The caramel coloring used in the iced tea mix is manufactured from high dextrose containing corn syrup, which is gluten free.
Why are the bags Round and why don't they have any strings?
The idea of a round bag came from discussions with consumers who prefer to brew their tea in teapots versus by the cup. The idea was that the round bag would sit nicely at the bottom of the tea pot. This teabag form also allowed us to put more tea in each teabag enabling a fuller, stronger brew per cup.
What is Orange Pekoe?
Contrary to its name, Orange Pekoe (pronounced "peck-o") is not a flavor, color or even a type of tea as one might assume. Pekoe and Orange Pekoe originally referred to the size of the leaves that were plucked, each leaf of the shoot having a different name. Presently these terms refer to the average size leaf used in a blend of teas. Tetley uses only the smallest and most tender leaves picked from the Camellia Sinensis bush to achieve the pure tea flavor we are so proud to serve.
How does Tetley® decaffeinate their tea?
Tetley® Naturally Decaffeinated tea is decaffeinated using the ethyl acetate method. Ethyl Acetate is found in nature as a component in ripe fruits such as apples, bananas, peaches. The tea leaf goes through a process where it is moistened with water and/or steam. The moistened tea leaves then come into contact with ethyl acetate which selectively absorbs caffeine and removes it from the tea. Any excess ethyl acetate is eliminated from the leaves as they dry. The amount of caffeine in an 8 ounce cup of tea prepared with one Tetley Naturally Decaffeinated tea bag is approximately 4 milligrams (99.6% caffeine free). The amount of caffeine in a similarly brewed eight ounce cup of regular tea is between 40 and 50 milligrams. The amount of caffeine in an 8 ounce cup of regular brewed coffee is between 80 and 120 milligrams.
How much caffeine is in a cup of tea?
There are between 40 and 50 milligrams of caffeine in a typical eight ounce cup of brewed black tea or green tea steeped for three to five minutes. An eight ounce cup of similarly brewed naturally decaffeinated tea contains approximately 4 milligrams of caffeine (99.6% caffeine free). The amount of caffeine in a typical cup of regular brewed coffee is between 80 and 120 milligrams.
Do Specialty teas contain caffeine?
If the specialty tea contains real tea derived from the Camellia Sinensis plant (typically black, green, oolong or white tea), then "yes" it would contain caffeine. You can tell by reading the ingredient listing on the package.
Do Herbal teas contain caffeine?
Herbal tea is not derived from the Camellia Sinensis plant; it typically consists of a blend of herbs, fruits and spices which are naturally caffeine-free. You can see the contents by viewing the ingredient listing on the package.
How much caffeine is in Tetley® Iced Tea Mix?
There are approximately 25 milligrams of caffeine in an 8 ounce glass of our prepared iced tea mix.
How is a proper cup of tea prepared?
We recommend using the following method to get the best brew from your Tetley® tea. Always use fresh water and bring it to a full, rolling boil. The flavor and color of tea is released fully when boiling water is used. The oxygen in the water is also a vital part of the extraction of flavor and color, so if the water has been standing for a length of time or is re-boiled, it will contain less oxygen.
Pour very hot water into your tea cup (or pot) to warm it for a few minutes while the kettle is heating. This reduces the temperature loss of the boiling water and ensures maximum extraction of color and flavor. Pour the hot water out and place the tea bag in the bottom of the cup (pot). Slowly pour the boiling water over the tea bag. Let the tea brew (steep) for 3 to 5 minutes. The color comes out quickly, but the flavor comes from the steeping!
If preparing our green teas, let the boiling water cool for a minute or two before pouring over the tea bag. Also, shorten the brew time to about two minutes.
Remove the tea bag and add milk or lemon and sugar as desired. Enjoy!
Can I use a coupon on a web order?
No, a coupon cannot be used on a web order; coupons are for use in retail outlets only.
Why is my iced tea cloudy?
Tetley® Classic Iced Tea Blend tea bags are specially blended not to cloud when refrigerated. Should you encounter a bit of clouding, just pour a little boiling (or very hot) water into the pitcher and it will clear right up! A bit of lemon juice will also clear up the tea.
Can I use the Tetley® Classic Iced Tea Blend tea bags to make hot tea?
Our iced teas are specially formulated to make delicious iced tea. We recommend you try our hot tea blend for making hot teas.
Is Tetley® tea Kosher?
If the OU symbol or the K symbol is on the tea package, then it is certified Kosher. Most of our products are Kosher. Our canister range is in the process of being certified Kosher.
What is the best way to store tea?
Tea should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to retain the best flavor possible. Tea has hydroscopic properties and will absorb odors and other flavors, so it is best to keep it away from other spices and flavored tea. It is not recommended that tea be kept in the refrigerator or in the freezer. Once your tea has been opened, you may want to place it in a canister or airtight plastic storage bag.
How many small bags equal a Tetley® Family Size tea bag?
Each Family Sized Iced Tea Blend tea bag brews one quart of iced tea. Our Family Sized Iced Tea Blend tea bags contain approximately the same amount of tea as four individual size tea bags. We have made the Family size tea bags for the convenience of our consumers who like to prepare large quantities of fresh brewed iced tea.
Is the Tetley® tea I buy in the USA the same as the Tetley® tea in Canada or the UK?
Tetley USA Inc. is a sister company to the Canadian and United Kingdom companies that sell Tetley brand tea products. All of these companies are TATA Enterprises and are commonly owned, but we operate separately. The consumers of each region enjoy different blends of tea, but recognize Tetley as an international brand of the highest quality. Our British Blend tea in the round bag is virtually the same blend as the Canadian tea. However, the USA consumer has shown through studies that they prefer the tea bag that brews one cup of tea at a time, versus the two cup tea bag preferred in the UK and Canada. If a taste difference is detected, please note that it is due to the amount of tea per tea bag, but be assured it is virtually the same blend.
Are Tetley® Classic Blend and British Blend teas "black teas"?
Yes. As you can see on our packaging, the ingredient statement says, "pekoe and orange pekoe" which is the description of the size of the leaf of the Camellia Sinensis plant used in the manufacturing of the product.
Black, Green and White tea come from the same leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant. However, it is the processing the leaves undergo which make the final tea different. Black tea comes from the leaves which have been plucked, withered, rolled and oxidized. The oxidized tea is then fired, or heated, to stop oxidation.
Green tea comes from the same plant, but the leaves are not permitted to oxidize before the drying stage. They are only partially withered, are then steamed, rolled and dried, before going off to the final firing.
Does Tetley® tea have antioxidants?
Yes. Black and green and white teas all contain special antioxidants known as flavonoids. Antioxidants are natural biochemical compounds found in plant foods such as fruits, vegetables and tea. Research suggests that flavonoids and other antioxidants may prevent cellular damage caused by unstable, highly reactive molecules called free radicals. These free radicals are formed in the body as a natural by-product of metabolism and also as a product of radiation, pollution, smoking and other sources. Antioxidants "mop up" these free radicals protecting the body from potential free-radical damage. Tea is an excellent source of antioxidants, and tastes great!
Is the tea in my cabinet still good? What is the shelf-life of Tetley® tea?
Tetley tea will be just as delicious and satisfying for 18 months from the date of manufacture if stored correctly. It is recommended that tea be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to retain the best flavor possible. Tea has hydroscopic properties and will absorb odors and other flavors, so it is best to keep it away from other spices and flavored tea. On the package of all Tetley tea bag products you will find a "best by" date for your reference. The tea is still safe to drink after this date, but may not have retained the fullest flavor as when it was first manufactured.
