The ETP is a non-commercial alliance of 18 international tea packers working together to promote social responsibility in the world tea trade and assure the ethical sourcing of tea. The ETP monitors the living and working conditions on tea estates and works with estate owners to see that appropriate improvements are made. Sometimes estates choose not to meet the minimum standards. That's when we draw the line and stop buying tea from them.

Malawi. You probably haven't heard of this small country in southern Africa. But we have.

That's because after tobacco, tea is Malawi's second biggest export. But despite a fine reputation for growing tea, this tiny country of 11 million people is one of the poorest in the world. As the largest single buyer of Malawi tea, Tetley decided to do something about this.

Here's how we're helping villagers in the tea growing regions of Malawi to make their lives a little bit better…

Villagers can access clean water

Since August 2004 we've worked with an experienced development agency to provide over 20,000 people with clean, safe water close to home. Our help has provided new water points in their villages and the training necessary to maintain these precious new facilities. Having clean water makes all the difference in the world.

"We are very proud of this new borehole. We can't believe it belongs to us. You have given us respect. We shall all try our best to take care of this new facility."

"Before, we had to walk nearly 3 miles to a neighbouring village to get clean water."

Kids have time to learn

In Malawi, it's often the children's job to collect water. In the past, they would walk for miles to find some that was clean. As a result, they had neither the time nor energy to attend school. Now that they have water in their village, these same kids can collect the day's water and still go to school and get an education.

Housewives are helping their families

Housewives also have to go and collect the water. Now with water nearby, they have the energy and the means to grow their own food. These women are not only providing food for their families, they're selling the surplus crops and earning money to help them take care of the people they love.

"With this borehole we shall save a lot of time and use it for growing vegetable crops."

Villagers are healthier

Thanks to the clean water, the number of illnesses and deaths from water-borne diseases has dropped significantly. The people in the villages are better able to work towards creating a future for themselves.

The future

We intend to continue our work in Malawi. We're branching out into schools to provide the basic toilet and hand-washing facilities that we, and our children, take for granted.
